The Midnight Visitor

  • Unconventional Secret Agent: Fowler, a young and romantic writer, is disappointed upon meeting Ausable, a secret agent who is fat, sloppy, and lacks the mysterious aura typically associated with spies in fiction.
  • The Important Report: Despite his appearance, Ausable is expecting a critical report concerning new missiles—a document so significant that it could change the course of history and for which many have risked their lives.
  • An Unexpected Intruder: When Ausable and Fowler enter the hotel room on the sixth floor, they find another secret agent named Max waiting for them, armed with a small automatic pistol.
  • The Balcony Deception: Ausable immediately displays incredible presence of mind by feigning irritation and complaining about a "balcony" outside his window, claiming it is the second time someone has used it to break into his room.
  • Max's Demands: Max reveals he entered using a passkey and was unaware of the balcony. He demands the report, stating it will be safer in his hands.
  • The Fake Police: A sudden knocking is heard at the door. Ausable tells a panicked Max that it is the police, whom he supposedly called to provide extra protection for the vital report.
  • The Fatal Leap: Terrified of being caught or shot by the police, Max backs toward the window and jumps out onto what he believes is a balcony to hide, letting out a single shrill scream as he falls.
  • The Revelation: The door opens to reveal not the police, but Henry, a waiter delivering a drink Ausable had previously ordered. Ausable reveals to a stunned Fowler that there was never a balcony at all.
