I make an amazing discovery

The Incident at Satis House

  • Pip visits Miss Havisham and experiences a presentiment that he will never see the house again.
  • While checking on her one last time, he discovers her clothed in flames. He manages to save her life by smothering the fire with his greatcoats.
  • Both Pip and Miss Havisham are injured; Pip’s hands are severely burnt, and Miss Havisham suffers a debilitating nervous shock.
  • In her semi-conscious state, Miss Havisham displays remorse, asking Pip to write "I forgive her" under her name.

Herbert’s Tale of Provis

  • Upon returning home, Pip is nursed by Herbert Pocket, who shares a story Provis (Magwitch) told him during Pip’s absence.
  • Provis once had a relationship with a jealous and violent woman who was tried for murdering another woman in a barn.
  • Mr Jaggers defended this woman and secured her acquittal, a case that initially made his reputation.
  • Provis believed his young daughter had been destroyed by the mother out of spite, leading him to hide from the law to avoid testifying against her.

The "Amazing Discovery"

  • By comparing the timeline and details provided by Herbert, Pip experiences a feverish conviction: the daughter Provis lost is Estella.
  • He concludes that the convict he has been hiding is actually Estella's father.

Confrontation with Mr Jaggers

  • Pip visits Mr Jaggers to finalise the £900 payment from Miss Havisham to secure Herbert’s partnership.
  • He confronts Jaggers with the truth about Estella's parents. After initial resistance, Jaggers admits the story in an impersonal, hypothetical manner.
  • Jaggers advises Pip to keep the secret, noting that revealing it would only bring disgrace to Estella and serve no benefit to anyone involved.
  • Pip leaves the office having completed the only "good thing" of his life since receiving his expectations: providing for Herbert’s future.
